While we were at the Coast last week, a winter storm roared in our ears for two days. It was difficult to find a way home because of downed trees, snow in the mountains and flooding! I would have loved to have been stranded at the beach--but alas, we finally made it home.

This is the mermaid who made her appearance during those stormy days. Clearly she wants the wind to quiet down! Yes, there are hearts everywhere in this painting--how many can you find?

FATuesday Artist Spotlight #60

Note: I apologize for being gone for so long. Just after Christmas, my external hard drive suffered a fall and would not work. I still don't know if years of photography can be rescued. Though I didn't lose everything -- I had some things backed up -- I was grief-stricken. I admit that I lost heart for awhile. But I'm back! This week's featured artists have been particularly inspiring to my heart.

I created Featured Art Tuesday Artist Spotlight, a showcase of inspiring Artists, as a forum for all Artists to share their work with one another -- this includes every type of medium, sculpture, cooking, beading, watercolour, restoring vintage cars, pen and ink, oils, gardening, interior decorating, photography and crafts, including drama, writing and poetry.

I only recently found Sherry Dole’s art and was immeasurably charmed. I was so inspired by her eclectic use of color and the graceful, playful faces of her subjects. What lovely artwork. I imagine it would be a wonderous, fanciful journey to view the world through Sherry’s eyes! I look forward to getting better acquainted with this gifted artist.

Sherry writes, “I absolutely Looooove animals and nature so I donate a portion of my sales to various animal shelters and welfare groups. I have two gorgeous dogs, a Pit Bull who I adopted as a Hurricane Katrina survivor and a sort of red Golden Retriever who was adopted from a local shelter. I have four cats, all rescues, who frequently model for me., altho not always willingly.”

Not only is Emille an incredibly talented artist, but she is a wonderful photographer and writer. I have enjoyed her blog immensely. Her photos and insights are inspiring, humorous and thoughtful. She is a lovely inspiration.

Having lost our own little Bootz a year ago, I was deeply touched by the artwork of Crystal Shannon. The animals she draws almost seem to move. She has captured the personality of these beloved pets in a way which seems almost magical. I am so moved and inspired by this amazing artist.

Crystal writes, “For over 25 years I have been a student of art. And I will always be a student as I am continually learning and polishing my skills as an artist. I have always been inspired by the beauty of nature and wildlife. I have always really loved animals, and that is another inspiration of mine, and why I love doing pet portraits so much.”

Carolyn’s blog has the most wonderful photography. Her pictures have an enchanting magic about them. She has an unusual way of framing each of her subjects which holds the eye. I also enjoyed reading her accompanying comments. Her writing is both humorous and thoughtful.

Because of the holiday and our travels through the end of the month, I will be featuring only one artist on FATuesday until the new year. Then it's back to the usual!

This week’s featured artist is Drusilla Kehl. What a surprise to receive this unusual beautifully painted Christmas card in the mail. When I opened the envelope, I laughed. Then, looking at my husband’s face as HE looked at the card, I giggled some more.

I love domesticated rats. The nicest rat I ever knew was Mr. BW, a rat who came to live with us one summer after spending an entire year with the third grade. He lived to a ripe old age. He was a dear little fellow. I will always miss him. When you visit Drusilla and view her art, you will guess she also loves rats! .

This gifted artist's whimsical nature shows in the exquisite painting above.

Drusilla loves all animals. Her drawings them are beautifully crafted and a delight to the eyes.

I adore Drusilla's pet portraits. As you can see by her gorgeous portrait of Napoleon the Cat, her brush captures the very essence and personality of her furry subjects.

I have been so inspired by Georgina Bedwell’s creativity--her artwork always puts a smile on my face. What a surprise to open an unexpected package to find two charming ornaments, personally made for me by this gifted artist. The first is of our dear little Bootz, who went to heaven too early, the second is of Toez--the kitten who now rules our home. I am privileged to know this inspiring artist as my Friend.

Georgina writes, “I am perhaps best known for Midnight and Sunshine, who are cat characters I create just for the fun of it. Their true to life feline antics seem to delight cat lovers from all over the world.”

This wonderful writer/illustrator caught my fancy the first time I laid eyes upon her loveable characters. Judy Grupp's whimsical nature clearly shines through her paintbrush. Personality and emotion flow through the characters she draws, capturing the heart and eyes.

Of her newest book on grief, Judy writes, “Since my audience will be older kids this time in addition to the younger ones, and their families, they've asked me to dress the animals in the attire and accessories relevant to kids today. This goofy giraffe is my first attempt. I think he is goofylishish - maybe too goofy for this type of book. Anytime you try to dress an animal, it's going to get silly. Maybe the story won't have a giraffe!”

I was astonished when a lovely print from Paula Kuitenbrouwer arrived yesterday, in my mailbox. The delicate tracery of flower and birds delighted my soul. To actually hold one of her pieces in my hands is a wonderful feeling. I am SO inspired.

Paula made me laugh when she wrote, “Artist’s Confusion…oops, I mean, Concentration: How many times have you, dearest fellow artist, dipped your pencil in your coffee mug? Or your brush in your tea mug? Or your spoon in your water paint? Did you ever notice your brown water-paint smells like coffee? Ever drank your water paint?” I can SO relate!

I was introduced to Judith Glover by my talented friend Valerie Greeley. Judith's delightful sketches and paintings of plants weave across the page like a delicate song. Her love for plants and gardens clearly permeates every stroke of her pen and brush. She is not only an artist, but loves to garden. She actually designed a medal-winning garden for the Chelsea Flower Show and won the BBC 'People's Award' for the Best Small City Garden! Her garden has featured in many magazines including Gardens Illustrated and Home and Gardens. Her winsome designs have been used extensively for greeting cards, fabric, ceramics, stationery, dated products and tinware and you can find her work on ecards for just about every occasion.

Judith journals, “As I write, autumn is showing its true colours and snatched days in the garden have been a joy. A gloriously mild October has lulled me into a false sense of security but it can’t be too long before first frosts arrive to snap at the heels of the unprepared gardener…”

Amber Day is one of the most creative artists I’ve met. She not only writes, but she creates incredible original hats and makes astoundingly beautiful jewelry from silver flatware. Her Onyx Cat dolls are charming, as are the ACEO’s she creates of that rascally cat’s adventures. She is a wonderfully talented artist in every art medium she puts hear hand to. This generous lady took time from her busy day to come to my home to teach me how to watercolor. I am SO blessed to have Amber as my dear Friend.

Amber writes, “I've been drawing since before I can remember. My parents tell me my first big art project was the pink elephants I drew all over their classic '65 mustang. The car was freshly painted and I used a crayola crayon, I was 3yrs old. Dad said he had a hard time being mad at me 'cause the elephants looked so good'. The car was repainted and I don't remember if I was punished or not. If I was, it didn't stop me drawing!”

Welcome Holy Babe - Guest Heart Thursday

December First seems a wonderful day to put up my latest watercolor. When I was a little girl, I wasn't so interested in Santa Claus. Rather I loved the beautiful and romantic story of a young girl, visited by an angel, given the gift of a Holy Child.

In my imagination, I watched Joseph as he tenderly cared for Mary--I loved how the angels protected them. I wished I could have been with the Shepherds who were visited by a multitude of the heavenly hosts, praising God and the birth of His Son.

I was in awe of the great Kings who sought the Babe from faraway lands. I wondered about His star and knew if I had been born then, I too, would have followed it to where He lay.

There are hearts in this painting--can you find them all?

I am out of time with all that must be done for a trip I will be taking this week. FATuesday Artist Spotlight takes many hours of work each week. So today, I am featuring one of my favorite artists once again--our beloved Great Aunt Martina Gangle Curl.

Great Aunt Martina was a delight. I can still hear her laughter and the sound of her voice in my mind. It was obvious she deeply loved her family. I remember her worn, yet beautiful face, the way her eyes would twinkle when she smiled beneath the ever-present scarf she wore over her hair. She was always kind to me and gently encouraged me to draw.

Above you see Aunt Martina in 1975, at a "sit in" protesting Portland General Electric. She would have LOVED today's Occupy Wallstreet movement! She would have been in the thick of it all.

This is the wonderful face I remember. She had a tender and truly noble heart. Like so many of today's young people, she was passionate about the equality of all peoples and caring for the poor and disadvantaged. When she was in her early 80's she was arrested for picketing the White House in Washington DC! I remember seeing her face on television. Though she and I did not always agree, I admired her stand for what she believed.

Aunt Martina was one of 200 artists employed by Federal Arts Project, the New Deal’s ambitious effort to support visual artists, writers, and dramatists under the auspices of the massive Works Progress Administration (WPA). These artists provided murals, paintings, watercolors, and wood carvings for Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood. She and fellow artist Arthur Runquist created a great mural for Rose City Park Elementary School in Portland. It is called The Columbia River Pioneer Migration – The Homesteaders. Her artwork hangs in the Oregon Art Museum and she is considered to be one of Oregon's most important historical artists.

Her artwork was born from the terrible Great Depression. She was one of seven children who lived in desperate circumstances. Their father had gone to look for gold during the Alaskan gold rush and was never heard from again. Life was incredibly hard. Their mother provided food for the family, working as a domestic – washing clothes, sewing, or doing farm chores. The family often followed the harvest as workers in the fields.

When Aunt Martina was in her mid-20's, she attended the Museum Art School in Portland. Unlike most artists of the time, her etchings, lino cuts, and lithographs of the mid-thirties often portrayed women and children fruit harvesters and other working people.

She once speculated how different things would have been if she had gone directly from high school to attend art school. “I would have had seven, or eight years of ignorance of what was happening in the country,” she reflected. “I would no doubt have painted flowers and landscapes instead of poor families and people running from violence, homeless people sleeping on benches, etc.” These powerful images from her early life experiences filled her thoughts and deeply influenced her artwork. Her mentors, she once mused, “didn’t realize what life had already done to my thinking.”

She and fellow artist Arthur Runquist, were blacklisted during the Cold War because of their political views. She wrote. “Thugs beat Arthur up. They injured his hand so badly doctors thought they would have to amputate. Luckily, his hand was saved." He and Martina were working on the Pendleton murals at the time.

Last year, when my sweet Sis Clytie called to say she had found an original painting by our Great Aunt Martina, I was in awe. The above painting was found in a box of our Grandmother's papers--which would have been destroyed that very day. Through her artwork, Aunt Martina succeeded in dramatizing the beauty and aesthetic diversity to be found in the everyday settings of people living throughout the Pacific Northwest in those hard years.

She was not only a gifted artist, but was a wonderful person who deeply loved her family. Once at a family reunion, I was sketching a rough picture of something which had caught my fancy. I remember feeling a hand on my hair, looking up to see Aunt Martina smiling down at me, nodding her approval.

I wish I would have known then, how much she loved art--I would have asked her about her life and how she saw the world--about what it was like growing up in the Depression. I wish I could tell her how proud I am to be her great niece and how much I treasure those moments when she would lean over my drawings with a smile and an encouraging word. I wish I could tell her what an inspiration she's been to me over the past few years.

Christmas Angel

This lovely angel is one of the first Christmas cards I designed, back in the late 1990's. It was folded into fourths, then in half, with some of the design lapping over onto the back of the card. I thought it elegant. This card is one of my favorites of that series--a perfect way to welcome in the Christmas season!

Turkey Tease - Guest Heart Thursday

Before our dear Booterz flew away to heaven, I was inspired to make a little comic about her. Her tail was incredibly long--14 inches of expressiveness. In the series, Bootz made friends with a little bird. At first Booterz thought about eating the birdie. Then she and the Bird became friends, teasing dragons, dogs and, yes--this poor unsuspecting turkey.

A perfect addition for both Guest Heart Thursday and Thanksgiving!

I found Sunny Carvalho’s amazing art through my sweet Friend Tammie Lee. I fell in love with Sunny's art at my first glance. Her artwork reflects a whimsical heart--the sculpture she creates has a grace and life all its own. I am so inspired by Sunny’s use of color and pattern. Her artwork moves--it twinkles!

Sunny writes, “Who, me? I guess I'd say I am a painter of Pretty Girls (and sometimes, Ugly Girls!) and maker of things! I have a need to create that I just can't contain. I do something different every day. I paint, sculpt original dolls, make all sorts of fun things and teach at Artfest in Port Townsend, WA”

Kylie Fowler is new to me. I love her thoughtful use of color in this portrait of her “Mum.” This fabulous artist loves to explore various styles. Her art reflects a deep fascination with life and a love for variety. She inspires me to try new things.

Kylie writes, “…I love any artwork that contains eyes. The eyes are generally the most important part of each of my artworks. As they say, 'The eyes are the windows to the soul'. I also enjoy sewing and producing mixed media artwork, so hopefully in the future I will produce more mixed media works of art. I am a creatologist. A person who loves to create.”

Becca, a talented artist, photographer and musician from Las Vegas, loves to create beautiful mixed media collages using vintage ephemera. She also likes to sew and is an avid antique hunter. She is a wonderful photographer and the good friend of two dearly loved orange kitty cats. I love the way Becca views her world and the way she shares it with us. She says the Great Pacific Northwest is one of her favorite places--she's one of us, even if she doesn't actually live here--I can tell. (grin)

Becca writes, ”I am a wife, crazy cat lady, hobby photographer and a self taught mixed-media artist…Music is also a big part of my life. I play classical piano, acoustic guitar and sing.” What an incredibly gifted lady Becca is! I have the feeling she could play music along with the wind in the trees.

Paula Kuitenbrouwer’s delicate artwork is also new to me. I love the gentle tracery of flower, bird and butterfly wing--there is a magical quality to this artist’s work which satisfies something in my eyes. I love to look--to see through this artist’s eyes. When I view Paula's beautiful drawings, I feel inspired to reproduce what I see in my own little garden.

Paula writes, “To me art is about creating beauty. I enjoy the process of creating beauty. There is so much to learn about it and how to achieve it. I like to find beautiful compositions with harmonious shapes and colours. If I make a drawing or painting that brings pleasure to the eye, harmony to the mind or peace to the heart, I feel happy. Apart from being intrigued by beautiful compositions, drawing helps me to escape the stressful concept of time. When I draw sometimes time is substituted for timelessness. Face of Light - Weekend Reflections

This is the first time I've entered one of my organic art pieces in Weekend Reflections. This was so special, I wanted to share it.

We were getting ready to work on an addition to the back of my parent's home. Chilly raindrops tumbled through the air in pockets of splashing cold. Then suddenly the sun came out. It peeked at us from between the branches of the trees. Later I realized there was a face--a face made of light...perhaps an angel watching over us, as we worked.

Above you see this lovely shining face, with delicate fir needle earrings, as I first glimpsed her through the lens of my camera.

Christmas Tree Angel - Guest Heart Thursday

This is the first sketch of our Christmas card. She is really my niece--and yes, there are lots of hidden hearts.

And now Malaya and I need your help. Christmas Tree Angel is a really boring name. We would like to know if anybody out there might have any ideas for a name for this Christmas card. If we choose your name, you will get a print of the finished card in the mail at Christmas time.

Four-year-old Malaya says, "I can hardly wait to see the names you think of!"

Helen Wheeler Shaw is new to me. This fascinating artist has a unique way of viewing her world. Her abstract pieces are just amazing. She is a free-spirited New Zealander from Texas, happily painting at her studio in the Texas hill country. Helen finds inspiration outside her own front window--the beautiful birds who inhabit her three-acre nature sanctuary. Her work reflects her great love for all animals and the earth.

Helen writes, "My ' Helen essence' shines brightest when I am creating, or when I am surrounded by nature. These two things are essential for my fulfillment and growth on this life journey. Nature inspires, delights, enchants and sustains me…”

Andrea Pratt's artwork is so inspiring. I love the detail she puts into her pieces. Each drawing has hidden patterns and meanings. Her charming artwork intrigues me--I want to look and look--and keep on looking.

Oil and acrylic paint, coloured pencils and my camera all feature prominently in my toybox. I find her eclectic use of mixed media art and papermache extremely inspiring. She is not only a gifted artist, but is a wonderful person with one of the biggest, most loving hearts I’ve ever known. I am privileged to call Darlene my Friend.

Darlene writes, “I am a mixed media artist who is a believer in following your hearts dreams and wishes. My background experience includes in oils, watercolors, stained glass, glass fusion, porcelain dolls, polymer clay dolls, and currently Mixed media and paper art. I am inspired by Michael Shapcott's use of highly detailed graphite underdrawings, which he treats so they won't smudge--then paints with colorful washes in oil and acrylic paints. In addition to his paintings, this Connecticut artist creates art videos which track the process of his paintings and highlight his unusual style. He credits his education for basic technical experience. However, he believes it was only after breaking with many of the traditional methods he was taught, that he developed the confidence, unique voice and style he has today.

Michael writes, "I have learned that you must above all else believe in yourself and your worth and be brave enough to live the life you choose. Being a full-time artist is about doing what you love every day, expressing yourself, touching others lives with your art, and making a unique mark on the world – but it is not for the lighthearted. Our lives depend on it. This is how we earn our living, how we spend most of our time and energy, what we pour our deepest passions into, how our face is shown to our loved ones and to the world. We don’t just want to succeed. We have to. I do this because I love it and what I aspire for is to reach out and touch viewers of my work, making sure that those who see my paintings see something that enriches their experience."

Foxydoodles - Sunday Scans

Here is one of my little Foxydoodle drawings. I love foxes. When we were small, I remember watching red foxes leaping above the grasses in the field across the street--in just this way.

I also remember a lady who came to the house with a tiny fox cub nestled in her arms. "Have you lost a puppy," she asked. She'd found him beside the road and didn't realize he was a fox!

Tangle of Hearts - Guest Heart Thursday

This is my very first attempt at cloud painting. After a life and death encounter with a staff infection in my foot and leg, my family gave me a camera. As I recovered, I would hobble around the block, viewing my world in a whole different way--through the camera's eye.

One late night, I spied a beauteous sunset through a tangle of curly willow branches. I saw hearts! Using a very old paint program, I attempted my first cloud painting. I was using the mouse as my paintbrush, so it took a very long time.

I have only recently become acquainted with the wonderfully detailed artwork of Ester Wilson. Her use of patterns, color and shading boggle the mind. She's inspired me with her spectacular use of detail and simplicity. I love the fact she likes to draw to classical music. Music tells a story and Ester becomes the storyteller.

Ester writes, “I’ve been drawing since age two, and have always felt the need to continue making images. I feel in my core that there is nothing more important than creating. I think that strong feeling has always been there with me, and so I decided to give it full attention and see how deep I can go with it; how much I can learn about myself through art.”

The work of Cathy Holtom is stunning. Her use of colors is so inspiring to me. I love the tones she chooses for each of extraordinary pieces. Each of her drawings evokes a feeling almost like a song.

Cathy writes, ”My art is an expression of an emotion about a time or place. I start with a sketch, a photograph or just a passing glance of something that remains in my mind. I work predominately with coloured pencils but I also like to use other mediums such as watercolour and oil depending on the mood or effect I want to create.”

I was having a bad day the moment I found Ernie D'Elia's hilarious illustrations. His capacity for expressing fun in his artwork just fills my eyes. I was inspired by his Animals on the Go series--which includes an Elephant in an Elevator and the above Shark in Shopping Cart. What great fun. Thank you for making me smile, Ernie.

Ernie writes, “…I use acrylic paint on illustration board. Occasionally I throw in some ball point pen, and a colored pencil or two, but mostly good old fashioned paint!”

Forest Dreaming - Sunday Scans

I often draw faces with forests and mountains surrounding them. Each face brings a different scenerio to my mind. In my photography I often see faces in clouds, trees and traced along the folds of hill and mighty mountain. Sometimes my imagination translates from reality into fantasy.

I first became acquainted with Anna Vanover through recommendations from some of my art friends. What an incredible artist! Her work is realistic, yet beautifully whimsical. Anna's charming artwork inspires me. I love the amazing amounts of personality she puts into her subjects! Her humor is wonderful!

Anna writes, “I create when I am happy - I am happy when I create. Perhaps this sums up who I am as a person. Those who know me well might say that more often than not you can find me with a paint brush in one hand, a cup of coffee in the other, and one or more furry friends within arm’s reach. These are the times that I am the most content.” Ah, I can SO relate!

I have never seen bottle lamps like these. When I found them, I was amazed and inspired by their sheer beauty and creativity of the artist, Songbird. Each of her pieces is uniquely gorgeous. She collects the bottles from a local town pub, then cleans and strips them of labels. She drills a small hole near the bottom, then uses tissue paper or crepe, to decorate the bottles. These wonderful lamps have a lovely glow which cannot be achieved with traditional lighting. I have never seen anything like them before!

Songbird writes, “I started making bottle lamps at the urging of my husband. I really did not want to take the time and effort needed, but after the first bottle was made and I could see how unique and pretty it was, I have not stopped making them. I believe that I need to be a good steward of this beautiful country in which I am privileged live, so keeping glass out of the landfills makes sense to me.”

I was perusing Etsy and found these amazing masks. They are created by a husband and wife team, Tom and Jill Banwell. Made of lightweight leather, some of these pieces are delicately lovely--like something I would draw. Others are simply fun--adding whimsical ears, or noses to the face of the wearer. I was SO inspired by the artistry I saw. It is interesting to note that the beautiful mask pictured above was worn by Lois Lane in Smallville!

Tom writes, “My wife Jill and I live in Penn Valley, California in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. It’s a rural area and we have my studio under the house. I get to enjoy watching the deer and other wildlife traipse by the window, which provides a relaxing atmosphere in which to be creative.”

I had the wonderful experience of meeting this talented lady recently in Spokane Valley, Washington. Sitting in her gorgeous living room with it's stone fireplace--walls complete with tapestries, richly appointed wall hangings and gorgeous artwork, I felt SO privileged. It was like I was in a castle.

Susan is one of the most creative people I've ever met. She works with home schooled children and their parents, producing filmed classes for homeschoolers on subjects, such as integrating art into history and how to write a mystery story! She has a huge closet of marvelous costumes and her creativity, when putting together sets and props for her classes, is boundless. I was so impressed with her interesting ideas and happy enthusiasm. Susan is not only a talented writer, fabulous teacher and extraordinarily talented artist, she is thoughtful and kind--a truly beautiful person both inside and out.

Susan writes, “…my classes are very animated, and I often wear costumes, yes, even when I teach writing! I try to make everything come alive! You will notice that my articles pack in a lot of ideas, because I know how precious your time is.”

At first glance, I thought the photographer above, Lori Grimmett, was standing in a snow bank! Amazing--that is actually sea foam. I was touched and inspired by her enchanting photography. The grace, beauty and magnificence of her work is unparalleled. A photographer once said God created moments just as he was ready to click the shutter. Lori's photography has that kind of supernatural quality about it. I want to see the world that way, too.

Lori’s goal is to “…encourage her viewers to see God in all of creation, to view the world in surprising and magnificent ways they never expected, and to pass that inspiration on to others.” She has succeeded!

Angel Cadence

In 2008, after a life and death struggle with MERSA, my family gave me a camera and a photoshop program. I found I had been given a special aptitude for catching recognisable shapes in the clouds. Then, using Photoshop, I would enhance what I saw, so others could see it too.

The angel above is one of my very first cloud paintings. At that time, I used the mouse as my paint brush. Today I use a Bamboo tablet--which is much easier!

Here you see the angel as I first saw her hanging over the alley outside our kitchen door. There's no doubt this is an angel!

I adore the photography of Tammie Lee. Each time I visit her blog, her incredible portrayal of Montana fills my eyes. I am in awe of her macro photography of tiny ice crystals. The way she is able to capture color glowing through rippling creek waters is fascinating. The photos she catches of sky, mountains and trees are indescribably beautiful--as lovely as their photographer. Tammie IS Montana to me.

I discovered my inspiring Friend, Sandrine Curtiss through Facebook artist Amber Day. Sandrine's work with black paper has been incredibly inspirational to me. She is a mostly self-taught artist, inspired by her older sister, to draw portraits with graphite pencils. In 2006, she started selling her artwork on Ebay. Her work is not only exquisite, but she is a delightful lady with a wonderfully down-to-earth sense of humor.

On Youtube, Sandrine responds, "All you need to do is practice, practice etc.. I know it sounds cliche, but there's really no other way. I didn't go to school for it and I haven't really been drawing animals for that long but since I started, I haven't stopped and I have greatly improved. Like they say, practice makes perfect."

Sissy's many insights and frequent moments of humor are wonderful and rare--like a lovely vintage card one might spot in a second hand store--little bits of treasure which delight the soul.

Of her artwork Clytie writes, “I don’t do art, art does itself. My fingers just move, independent of my mind--I don’t think about it. I’m always shocked when something turns out right and looks pretty!”

I found Bernie Krausse, quite by accident as I was browsing for photos of the Pacific Northwest. Located in Mazama, Washington State, Bernie's photos are awe-inspiring. I love the Northwest, and to find such an incredibly talented photographer such as Bernie, who obviously loves this part of the world as I do, is inspiring!

I found this mysterious artist through Etsy. I adore the whimsical characters this artist creates. She uses a variety of art mediums to create her fascinating pieces. Though she works mostly with fabrics, the above sampling is what her creative mind did with an ink blot!

I was unable to discover this lovely artist’s name, but of herself she writes, “Somewhere in Deepest Darkest Devon a strange woman lives surrounded by piles of felt, thread, material, paper and paint. Not knowing how else to dig herself out, she fashions these raw materials into plushies, brooches, dolls, paintings and textile pieces. One day she will be free - but only if she stops buying more stuff!!! Welcome to my world! I am a mixed media artist living in South Devon UK. I've been acquainted with Lynn Risor's extraordinary artwork for over ten years now. I first saw one of her charming rock paintings in Gig Harber, Washington. I never forgot her name and always looked for her work. I finally found her on DA, an online art page! Lynn is not only an incredibly talented artist, but she is dear and sweet person in real life. I am honored to call this incredible artist, my Friend.

Lynn writes of herself, "I am what I am! A child of God, daughter, sister, niece, mother, grand mother, friend, probably foe, sinner saved by grace, artist, and lover of life! I paint happy pictures often depicting furries, or feline, but prefer to remain separate from my art, to be seen as who I am - ME!"

I was so happy to find this wonderfully eclectic artist. Hannah Redden's gracious artwork is lovely. The way she sees her world and interacts with various mediums to create such unique pieces, inspires my soul.

Hannah writes, "I'm working on a collection along the lines of 'Royal Oak' or something royalesque, I'm not quite sure of the exact name but I really like the theme. I've been working with water colour and pen & ink, I recently got Photo Shop for my laptop so will soon be transferring my designs into screen images and repeat designs ready to be transferred into textile images. I'm so excited!”

Isn't this lovely? There is a soft beauty which flows from Tammie's graceful artwork which fills one's heart with wonder. The words she writes to accompany her art and photography often touch my heart in a way I can't explain.

The way Tammie presents Montana's glorious mountains, rivers, flora and fauna is truly inspired. She has a special gift to see her world in a way most people don't. She is a dear friend and a great inspiration to me personally.

Tammie writes, “Hello, my name is Tammie. I am a nature photographer and writer of poetry. I live in a wee cabin surrounded by woods, meadows and wildlife. Friends and family are dear to me. Days are filled with creative projects of many sorts.”

I am not sure how we first became acquainted, but I adore Karen! Karen Xavier's pictured recipes are irresistible! My mouth waters every time she posts one of them on her blog. I am sure the fabulous aroma permeates the internet -- right onto my computer. MMmmMmm! But she is not only an extraordinary cook, she is also a marvelous photographer!

I love to peruse her blog, which chronicles her life and adventures in South India. As you can see by the photo above, she finds some fascinating subjects.

Karen writes, “I had a great childhood, grew up with twin brothers & a younger sister, (so you can imagine how a house with four kids is like) there was always the sound of things breaking, mom shouting, we kids fighting, laughing or crying... t'was chaos but it was a fun kinda chaos. Now all of us manage to get together once a year during the most wonderful season, Christmas. This is the month I live for... I also live for chocolates, ice cream, the rain, the ocean, the smell of something baking, music, memories, laughter, books, and a whole lot more.” I enjoyed Karen's description of her growing up years! I grew up in the same kind of wonderfully chaotic family.

Kelly Medford is new to me. I was charmed and inspired by her astonishing oil paintings. I have only done one oil in my life--now that I see Kelly's striking paintings, I feel like trying oils again. Her style is so distinctive -- I love her use of color and the way she creates movement in her astonishing paintings.

Of the painting above, Kelly writes, “I've started but never finished many a painting here of the same clump of cypress trees. In the past each time I started a painting here it either got too complicated trying to look up and deal with the drawing of all those branches, the light and shadow and then all that straggly Spanish moss hanging everywhere, so I never finished a painting here until today. This time I told myself I was going to pick one tree and see it through. I got into painting this tree and wanted to see it through to the end.”

I have known Casi since she was a tiny girl. An accomplished young artist in many mediums, Casi and her fellow artisans have been trained to create these exquisitely crafted glass earrings. Designed by AnneMarie Hoffman, they come in a variety of pretty colors and are incredibly graceful and eye-catching. When one holds a pair of these original creations in one's own hands, the warmth and beauty of the glass is indescribable. There is a kind of lovely magic here which inspires me.

I found Lillie Marie's blog quite by accident. This gifted artisan creates unusual jewelry which reflects her great love for our Creator. Her charming pieces fill both the eyes and the heart. She inspires me to stretch beyond what I think I can do.

Lillie thoughtfully writes, “I am so thankful that my body and mind are both able to do all the things required to do on Mondays, I could be minus my eyesight, where I couldn't see my home that needs so much done or without proper use of my limbs, I could be an invalid, being unable to do anything without help, There are so many women in the world whether sick and/or disabled mentally or physically that would love to be able to enjoy Mondays by having all these things to do.”

Chuck Neighbors has been an inspiration to my husband and me for many years. The first drama I saw him perform was powerful and changed my life forever. I found Julia Ruffles through some of my artist friends on Facebook. What an incredible artist. I am enamored with the detail in her work. As a watercolourist she is inspiring. Her love for animals bursts through her work--shines through the speaking eyes of her wild animal friends. The only word I could use to describe this talented artist's work is fabulous.

Julia reflectively writes, “The painting process requires a great deal of patience, with countless watercolour marks built up using many differing colours and brushstrokes...Watercolour as a medium (for painting) has a great strength yet subtle vulnerability that allows the delicacy of life to be portrayed...”

I have always loved tatting. For those of you have never heard of it, tatting is an ancient way of making intricate lace using knots and shuttles. Sissy Clytie is Home!

This is a commissioned piece I've been working on. It is a picture of how I see Psalm 91. These verses show us that The Creator's shadow overshadows our life's shadows. I couldn't get the camera to do the graphite drawing justice--so when I'm done adding pen and ink, along with color, I'll put it up for you.

I am posting this drawing in celebration of my darling Sister Clytie's release from the hospital.

God was protecting her! As you were Praying for Clytie, the emergency room doctor got a bee in his bonnet. Though the tests had come back with inconclusive results -- normal or just a tiny bit high, that wonderful doctor was convinced there was a blockage -- he would not give up looking. Amazing, amazing! He even asked for two-year old data in order to find the problem. Because of this doctor's dogged persistence Sissy is going to be just fine.

Clytie had an angiogram yesterday morning, during which the actual blockage was discovered. They cleared the vein, and put in a stent. I spent yesterday afternoon with Clytie in the hospital and had the huge pleasure of picking her up and bringing her home this morning.

THANK YOU everyone for your thoughts and prayers. I know there was an angel hanging over that doctor's shoulder, telling him to look further, when the tests said something completely different than the truth.

Sissy Clytie Rushed to Hospital

I am letting everyone know that my sweet little sis Clytie was rushed to emergency this morning. She was in tremendous pain. This is the second time she's gone into emergency over the past few weeks. Turns out what the doctors from local urgent care thought might be acid reflux disease--is in reality a blockage in her heart.

I spoke with Sissy about an hour ago and she is feeling MUCH better. She says they will be doing an angiogram tomorrow to find out where the blockage is. After that, they are talking about putting a stent in. Looks like she will be in the hospital for a few days until they figure out what's going on.

I would appreciate your prayers for Sissy's complete recovery. She is heart of my heart--and the world would be a terribly dull place without her in it. She's not only one of my own best friends, she is beloved to many people out there.

I only recently discovered Joel Haas, through a quote from one of our FATuesday's featured artists. Joel's sculpture is delightfully inspiring. He infuses each of his unusual pieces with vivid personality. One expects these whimsical metal sculptures to turn and wink when no one is watching.

Joel writes, “I make whimsical animals for the garden. Most pieces are welded and forged together from scrap steel parts and painted with rust-resistant primer. The final colors are applied with sign-painters' lacquers which won't fade in sunlight. Some people have asked me if there is any serious or deep meaning to my work. I say, ‘I hope not. There're already enough serious and deep meanings in the world to keep thousands of art critics busy.’ I just make stuff that transports me to a happier place where I can hum and whistle. Art can do that.”

The extraordinary art of Sergei Shillabeer fills my eyes to the brim. His inspiring use of color and light seem almost supernatural. There is a transcendent, translucent glow to each of his paintings. Born in 1946 in Binghamton, New York, Sergei received his early art training in Chicago and during the late 1950's in Los Angeles. His paintings and sculpture have been exhibited in the Netherlands, Mexico, and Japan. It is no surprise he has exhibited in conjunction with the United Nations and was exhibited solo at the National Academy of Arts and Sciences!

Sergei writes, “My training came primarily by staring and staring at the masters at museums every chance I could get. I have a fondness for Monet and especially Manet and an absolute love for Sargent and Jouquin Sorolla…”

I found the enchanting clay art of Abby Moore on Facebook. Her charming work is so inspiring. Because of this artist's creative work, I have felt the urge to dig my fingers into polymers again. As you can see, Abby's Christmas ornaments are gorgeous. Some of her fascinating artwork looks as though she's quilted her designs from cloth--only it is clay.

Abby writes, “I’ve been sculpting since I was a little child. Of course back then, I only played with play-doh. Thank goodness I found polymer clay for a history project when I was 11 years old. I’ve been claying ever since and would be lost with out it. It is such a wonderful experience every time I sculpt something new with polymer clay! That’s why I love it so much.”

The exquisite artwork of Danny Hahbohm speeds right past the eye gate into one's very soul. When I visit his webpage I come away refreshed. His artwork is truly inspired and inspiring. He paints light as though he has already visited heaven, if that were possible. His artwork speaks truth without saying one word.

Danny writes, “…I have a place I call my God room. It’s just a back porch that overlooks God’s domain, which for me is a small pond and a section of the woods joining with some condos and a pool. It is just some place where I get to be with God alone. Just He and I as we talk and share our thoughts together…”

I found the photography of Kannus-Maoo quite by accident. Her macro work is incredible--a poetic dance between camera and subject. I love to take pictures of tiny things--her pictures inspire me to greater heights.

The artwork of Stephen Bennett is extraordinary. When I first saw his wonderful portraits, I gasped. His use of colors is so creative and inspiring. His subjects touched me to the soul--there's something almost mystical about his art--something which captures the imagination and fills one's eyes to the brim with tears. At least that is how his work affects me personally.

My darling sister Clytie first introduced me to Prospero, of Serendipitous Garden. His wonderfully imaginative, digitally enhanced photos are eye-catchingly beautiful. The haunting loveliness of his art, coupled with the profound nature of the words he chooses to accompany each photo, always causes me to stop and ponder. Sissy and I have adopted Propero as our own dear brother--which gives us much license to tease the daylights out of him. (grin)

On a more serious side, from one of his most recent blog entries, Prospero writes, "Words like conscience, tenderness, and autumn light have already disappeared.” A profound thought, indeed.

I first found Jeanne Klaver, an artist from Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, through her blog. Her photography -- especially the set of photos (the first of them seen above) chronicling bird against scary snake -- was gripping. I hope the birdie did get away!

Then I found Jeanne's art blog, full of wonderful sketches and imaginative drawings. I loved the caption she has in the header of her blog. "The essential element is imagination." This is the essence of Jeanne's inspiring work.

She quotes Joel Hass, "I just make stuff that transports me to a happier place where I can hum and whistle. Art can do that." That is the sweet place Jeanne's art takes us!

I found Adrian Mills through one of my favorite artists, Valerie Greeley. The simplicity of line and vividness of color are absorbing. His inspiring work not only appeals to children, but to adults. That is quite an accomplishment for any artist. Adrian is presently working on a picture book. I am excited to see what this talented artist has in store for us.

Adrian writes, “I am a freelance artist and children's book illustrator currently based in the South East… My work primarily consists of pen and ink drawings with a vibrant mix of colour. I enjoy creating characters and aim for my work to be contemporary, quirky and fun.”

I found Jane Gray quite by accident. This wonderful writer, photographer and artist, from Bronteland, Yorkshire in the United Kingdom, has inspired me to try my hand at writing again. I was so intrigued by the storyline she shares. But not only that--her charming photography and incredible artwork add a riveting note. Set in the Yorkshire moors and marble mountains of Tuscany, her "time-slip" novel tells of the love between a young painter and a sculptor who are neighbors, but who actually live half a century apart.

Jane writes, "I have been a folk singer, a fashion designer in London, run a gallery and coffee shop in the lovely Yorkshire Dales, written newspaper articles and magazine features, short stories, songs, poetry and even greetings cards... The Time Sculptor’s Secret is my first novel.”

Orchid Faery - Pink Saturday

I once visited a greenhouse where rare orchids grew. That is where I met this little Orchid Faery, wearing these exotic blooms in her hair. The orchids she wears are one of a kind, tended lovingly by a master gardener.

I started with a pencil sketch, which I inked in with various sized indelible ink Staedtler pens. After inking, I erased the pencil lines, then added vibrant color with my beloved Prismacolor pencils.

To make sure the outside edges remained crisp and clear, I re-inked some of the more prominent lines. This must be done with care, gently rolling the ink pen tips periodically, because bees wax from the Prismacolor pencils can clog the flow of the ink.

The Adventures of Toez, the Polydactyl Kitten - Guest Heart Thursday

Princess Twinkle Toez came to live with us about a month ago. She has six toes on all but one paw. She is what people sometimes refer to as a Mitten Cat, because her front paws look like mittens. Her back paws look like her feet are on wrong, because the larger toe is on the outside of her foot--rather than the inside.

Above you see her with one of the toys she delights to bat across the floor. Once she catches it, she often holds her prize between her hands--rather like a human!

Her feisty personality has inspired many small ACEO drawings--this is another. She loves to play--often pouncing upon anything that moves--and sometimes it is all in her imagination.

Toez was sleeping in the window seat when I sketched this more realistic drawing of her.

After awhile she awoke with that quizzical look upon her whiskered face. "What you doing?" she seems to say. She would rather eat my pencil, you see--and why did I awaken her from her nap? Well, she's just SO cute! I'm sure as time proceeds there will be many more adventures from Toez, the Polydactyl Kitten

I fell in love with the bold color and perfect shading found in the paintings of Heather Foust. Her artwork is full of whimsical surprises which inspire my own art. She is not only a gifted artist, but is an engaging writer, too. I love reading her thoughts about each of her pieces. Every painting by Michael Naples is food for the eye. I have no idea how this amazing artist is able to paint one piece each day. Each of his wonderful paintings has a power that is undeniable. I have a huge admiration for Australian artist Matteo Grilli, who's great love for nature can be seen in every brush stroke. The journaling feel of some of his pieces often gives his paintings a special allure. As a beginning watercolourist, I find great inspiration in this brilliant artist's exquisite work.

Matteo writes of the painting above, "...I wanted to show a page from the 'Design Book', the sketchbook I use to plan and design what's in my mind before the actual painting. I developed this one from a few sketches and a couple of photos collected from a walk at Toohey Forest, South Brisbane. Although these birds, now a favorite of mine, are so colorful, in some conditions of light they can camouflage extremely well within their environment."

Years ago, my family and I had the privilege of staying in the home of Margie and John Wall. To our great surprise, there was a tiny faery house just outside the front door, which fascinated and captivated our imaginations. Margie taught the kids how to make these amazing little fairy tree houses with their tiny furnishings. My eldest was inspired to build miniature chairs and furniture out of stalks of dried grass. Each of our kids built their own little habitats, which they still have. If you get the chance, purchase your own copy of this charming book.

Margie writes, "A lot of the fun for you, in building a treehouse of your own, will be finding the materials." My children spent HOURS looking for things they could use in their little treehouses. They created some charming habitats--to watch a child's imagination at work, is truly a wonderful thing!

I have enjoyed Al's wonderful pictures for some time. I love the way he captures emotion on film. His work has a crisp edge to it which inspires me. He is a gifted photographer who's work reflects his love of the world with unusual angles and artistic sensitivity.

Chief Joseph in the Clouds

I showed this cloud painting to a friend of mine awhile back. I had thought this fellow looked a bit like George Washington. But she thought, instead, that this man looked like an Indian Chief. Of course, I thought of Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce Tribe.

Dad recently told me we are related to the Nez Perce Indians. I feel honored to know Native American blood runs in my veins. I have always felt a connection to Chief Joseph. He was a noble man who fought hard for his people in a time of great change and transition.

In most of the photos and drawings I found of Chief Joseph, there is a profound sadness in his eyes. When I read his story and the story of the Nez Perce peoples I understand why such deep grief is reflected there.

Above you see him as I first saw him in the clouds. He is smiling. That idea makes my heart happy.

Star Dancer, ACEO, ATC

Malaya, my darling little niece and I did some watercolors together Thursday. This star dancer is a girl I often draw. I don't know why--she just keeps showing up.

Above you see my darling Malaya's watercolor called Sunset Outside My House. Not too bad for a four-year-old! It is so fun to teach her how to mix colors, spread them across the paper--we are both learning various brush techniques--which as you can see, in a four-year old's hand, can have some spectacular results! I think this picture is breathtaking.

Forgiveness - Guest Heart Thursday

As children grow older and yearn to fly, great hurt can take place between parent and child. Forgiveness between child and parent is incredibly important for growth in later life. Bitterness can grow when forgiveness is not given, or received.

I remember the day I realized my Mother was an extraordinarily interesting person. It was an astonishing revelation how much she and I had in common. She became someone I would seek out -- I loved hanging with her. What a wonderful time in my life to live close enough to go walking with her every morning--how I cherish those memories. She was (and still is) really fun! I am so grateful for the friendship we have.

I have known Darlene Pringle for several years. In fact, when we first got acquainted I won a print of the drawing you see above. Her work hangs in my office where it fills my eyes every day. What a privilege to share this genuinely beautiful lady’s life. She is one of the most effervescent people I’ve had the honor to know!

As you can see from the wonderful clay doll above, Darlene is a versitile artist. She is a self taught mixed media artist who works with a huge array of artistic mediums. This sweet woman is a musician who loves piano, theatre, antiques and floral gardening. She is also a writer/Contributor for Christian Spotlight, an International Movie Review site.

Darlene writes, "When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, 'I used everything you gave me Lord.'"

I met Robin years ago, at a lady's retreat where she was the speaker and we were the drama entertainment. I received one of her books and have been a big fan ever since. My teenage daughters loved her books as much as I did.

It is no surprise Robin got her start as a writer when the teens at her church challenged her to write stories for them. This wonderful storyteller hadn’t thought much about being a writer, but took their request to heart and set an alarm for 3 a.m., three days a week. With two small children it was the only time she could find to write. After many rejections, Robin's book was sold and she hasn’t stopped writing since. Over four million copies of her 75 books have sold and can be found in a dozen translations all over the world. It is a GREAT honor to know this wonderful artist.

Robin writes of her own dear daughter’s recent wedding, “Over the years I’ve written some dreamy romance moments for young couples but I could never write this. How do you describe the mesmerizing beauty of innocence? How do you catch so much happiness like fireflies in a jar and carry the glow with you always in your heart? Sigh. So much happiness." Having a Mom who's a writer can be really fun, I see!

I have followed Henny Netjes fascinating blog for several years now. As you can see from the picture above, her photography is breathtaking.

She is also a wonderful artist. Henny’s charmingly thoughtful artwork is extraordinary. I believe she should be writing and illustrating children's books.

Henny writes, “I draw and make pictures about sense and seemingly non-sense. about beauty around, yet in hurry life and all important else, forget to look & see. About God's glimpse shining through. I have known Becky Loyall through her blog for several years now. She has been working on some altered books for her sweet granddaughters' upcoming birthdays. I have enjoyed watching each charming page as it is added to the whole!

Sorrow and Joy

A fairy sits alone and cries,

Tears streaming down from both her eyes.

Why is her heart so very sad?
What will make her soul turn glad?
Seeing the one she loves and misses,

Covering that one with all her kisses;
When she has her loved one near

And holds the one she loves so dear,
Her eyes will sparkle and her smile return

Searching the internet for some of today’s talented poets, I found the whimsical faery poetry of Randi Kuhne. Her word pictures inspire ideas for drawings in my mind--she uses words to paint beautiful pictures of faeries and their magical world. Randi also loves photography and music and is working on a book of illustrated fairy poems.

Randi writes, “I've written poems since grade school and began to focus on fairies several years ago. I'm a lazy/workaholic affiliate marketer...Eventually I will illustrate some of my fairy poems and sell them online.” She says of herself, “And there you have it, me in a nutshell. Emphasis on nut.” What a delightful lady! I will be one of the first in line, to purchase her fairy poetry book when it comes available.

I found Oona Patterson's amazing paper sculpture quite by accident. I was instantly and forever mesmerized by the incredible detail in her sculpture. There is a story to be read with the eyes, except not in the usual sense. When you visit this extraordinary artist, you will see what I mean. I felt SO inspired.

Ooona writes, “I am a paper artist who specializes in miniature sculptures. From books & other scraps I make detailed scenes that describe and illustrate stories & poems I’ve written. Heavily influenced by old fashioned children’s tales, my sculptures have been described as miniature magical worlds.”

Having only recently been introduced to watercolour, I found the work of Tim Wootten to be inspiring almost beyond words. The lovely pastel washes--the soft realism of his subjects smite the eyes with their beauty. I like the way he writes his observations right into the painting. This gives his work the personal feel of reading a journal.

Of his recent work, Tim writes, “The past few weeks have been spent working around the property but art-time has been spent trying to develop my work across a range of media. I find that switching approaches and spending a period of time exploring what different materials can offer to me and how I can best use their properties.”

In her college years, Karen Jurick dreamed of becoming an illustrator. But life happened and instead she ended in business with her parents for a number of years. When they were gone, she ran the business for nearly 32 years. I admire this dear lady. After neglecting her artwork for all that time, she stepped out to follow her dream and began to paint again. The pure harmony of color and line in her paintings, as she captures people in their everyday lives, is breathtaking.

Karen writes, “After 15+ years of not doing any art, in 2004 I started painting. I sold enough on eBay to build a studio in my back yard - then began using oils for the first time. That lead to selling more paintings on eBay - then a year later I entered work in a gallery. A year later, I entered into another gallery, then another. Now I’m in a comfortable place - doing larger works for those three galleries while I continue to paint small pieces that frequently auction on eBay. I take my camera everywhere, paint from those photos - moments in time, people just doing their thing.”

I have fallen in love with Holly Loyd's unusual sculpture. I have been so excited about her work. An eclectic artist who's curiosity and talent ooze from every thing she does, she is an artist to watch. The grace and creativity with which she endows each of her pieces is fantastic.

Holly writes, "I am experimenting with dipping random things in slip and firing them. "Slip dipping." The idea is that you dip the object (paper, fabric, cardboard...) into slip, let it dry, low fire it, and when its fired the dipped object should burn out, leaving a fragile ceramic shell. I am about to bisque my first test of dipped objects. (kinda nervous that I will end up with ceramic crumbs) eh we'll see how it goes. Cross your fingers!"

I found Anna on facebook and felt an instant connection with her. She is so inspiring to me--and has given me some wonderful artistic advice! Her wonderful artwork and generous heart are so precious and unique. There is a wonderful gentleness which permeates her charming work. When I look at her paintings they make my heart feel warm.

Anna writes, "I have been painting all my life since I remember me. When I was a child, I read a book where story hero Karandash painted pictures, which become alive as soon as they had been finished. I thought if I will learn to paint really good, my pictures will become alive some day too. This child dream still lives deeply in my heart. I know it will never happens, but I feel addicted to magic of painting and drawing, because it makes our life so emotional and colorful." As a child, I remember dreaming my drawings could come to life. This whimsical idea delights my heart. I believe Anna is a kindred heart.

Cady Butterfly - Sunday Scans

Here is another of my latest watercolours! I loved painting with all the different colors, but it took a long time, as much of the time I had to let the paper dry between painting. Took me quite awhile to finish this painting. I think it is my favorite watercolour so far! This delightful little girl, like a flower, surely would attract the most beautiful butterflies.

Nasarah, Unicorn Heart - Guest Heart Thursday

This is Nasarah, the Unicorn. This unicorn's special name comes from my sweet Niece, Malaya--who loves unicorns very much. She says Nasarah's favorite thing to eat is apples. She sleeps in the top of an apple tree. She eats snowflakes in winter and skates on the ice. But in summer the unicorn's favorite thing of all is to twirl!

I became acquainted with the bronze sculpture of Austin Barton years ago. We had the privilege of privately touring some of the museums and art galleries of Joseph, Oregon. While there are many western artists to be found--none is more remarkable than the stunning grace and sheer personality Austin Barton catches in each of his bronze pieces. I am proud to say, Mr. Barton is a native Oregonian--he grew up making a living breaking horses, working on farms and ranches. As a young boy, Austin’s dream was to become an artist. Indeed, this amazing artist's personal experience and great love of the old West is reflected in each of his exquisitely detailed sculptures.

Of the sculpture above, Austin writes, “When working with horses, especially in the days of ole’, there were always surprises, both for the horse and rider. In his famed bronze “Attitude Adjustment”, a viewer must decide who is adjusting who.”

I found Ted Blackman's artwork through Illustration Friday several months ago. His cartoons hit my funny bone. His way of looking at the world is delightfully quirky and sometimes macabre, yet at the same hilariously funny. He has a wonderfully unique way of looking at the world. He makes me laugh and inspires me to look at things in a different light altogether.

Mr. Blackman writes, “I work in the animation industry in Southern Calif as a development artist and art director, and have been fortunate to have worked on many high-profile shows during my long career, including development and art direction on the original "Batman Animated" series, and visual development on "The Incredibles", and "Cloudy with A Chance Of Meatballs". Currently I'm an art director at Warner Bros animation.”

Gay McKinnon is an inspiring artist. She has the uncanny ability to express an entire story with a few simple, yet charming lines. Gay has a multitude of stylings and is gifted in many art mediums. This eclectic artist also makes the most delightful glass sculptures and sells original glasswork from her own studio.

Gay writes, “I’m an artist based in Hobart, Tasmania. I run a small glass studio and am studying children's book illustration.”

I have a great love for classic cars and a deep admiration for those who take their time to work on them. Restoring a beautiful old car, in my opinion, is art. I was floored by the amount of work Frank "the Crank" put into this wonderful old Mercury. Frank is a truly talented artist.

He writes, “I have been messing with cars and cameras since I was around 14. That's when I got my first car and my first camera - a 1961 Triumph Spitfire and a 35mm Argus. So you might say I have had my share of "hands-on" experience with both hobbies.”

I found Georgina Bedwell on facebook. What a wonderfully whimsical artist she is! I love the humor she instills into her darling drawings. I am especially charmed by her cat characters. She has a wonderful blog Midnight's Blog, chronicling the fabulously funny adventures of one of her kitty characters--I found myself laughing out loud more than once. One can see this talented artist's great love for all animals in her inspiring drawings.

Of herself, Georgina writes, “I'm an artist who loves animals and donates a portion of my art sales to animal rescues.” I deeply admire this wonderful artist's dedication to animals in need.

I became acquainted with Paige Curtis on DA years ago. Her sweet face and dramatic poses can be seen in many of my creations. She is a darling girl who is not only beautiful outside, but is just as lovely inside--she reminds me of one of my own daughters. Paige is a photographer and a gifted digital artist in her own right. She also was the inspiration for my recent experimentation with Art Noeveau called Dancing Free. It is a great honor to know this precious young lady.

Paige writes, “Six years ago Dove-Stock got its start on the quickly-growing artist community, DA. I was 17 years old and looking for a creative outlet which was not easily available in my small home town. Today, those early photos have been used by artists around the world in countless creations, including book and album covers, website designs, and breathtaking paintings. Eldy is a new artist I found while perusing various artists who use graphite as a main medium. This amazing artist's work inspired me to use graphite more often. The personality she puts into her subjects is captivating. Reading the story of how this gifted artist persued her dream is an inspiration to every artist, including me.

In an excerpt from her description of her own artistic journey, Eldy writes of the year 2009, “… Most pieces were for learning how to use graphite more effectively. I gleaned as much info as I could from several drawing tutorial internet sites and put it to use as I went along. I could see improvement in my skills and drawing confidence every day. I ended up with 57 drawings for the year. Many grace the walls of the dog grooming shop we built on the property and the rest surround me in my art loft. A wonderous and inspirational year!”

Little Pixy Boots is another new artist. I love her unique style. This eclectic artist has a plethora of talents. She is an independent TV producer, wedding videographer and photographer. She's an aspiring film director and a free lance graphic designer. It is no suprise her artwork is so delightfully imaginative.

Of herself, she writes, “Little Pixy Boots is a self-taught Artist who has been illustrating since she is four years old (she is now in her official "30s"). Her first doodle was a few monster-like faces on the first few blank pages of her favourite Gulliver's Travels picture book, because she thought blank pages are meant to be filled up.”

I found Lynda Wilson through Illustration Friday. What a marvelous artist! I was deeply inspired by her beautiful artwork and the subjects she chooses. There is a lovely sense of story in each of her drawings.

Lyndi writes, “I'm a children's book author and illustrator ~ creating works of whimsy brings me great joy. When not working on a book, a challenge illustration or pencil portrait, I'm often seen up to my elbows in mud, creating pottery.” I would love to see some of her pottery one of these days!

Dancing Free - Sunday Scans

I LOVE watercolour. I like the way the brush feels in my fingers--I love the way the colors spread across the paper. There is something magical about the feel of a color-plumped brush about to spill brightness into a black and white world.

Above you see the pen and ink version. I love inking designs onto the paper--as you can see, detail is something I really enjoy.
